Bernicia is the northernmost realm of Albion - a wild, remote, harsh and largely uncivilised place, containing towering mountains, deep glens and dark forests. Beasts, bandits and evil monsters plague the wilderness, as well as ad hoc raids from nearby Caledonia. Most settlements are fortified towns near the coast, and knightly orders have traditionally held great sway in providing protection for the local population.

Bernicia had been ruled by a beloved Queen, the Grandmaster of the Knights of the North, an order dedicated to Draco. However, much has changed for the proud northern realm; the Queen was lost to the Mists of Elvesham, along with many of the best and brightest of the nobles and knights, defending Albion from the fell creatures that ever seek to escape and quench their thirst with the blood of the people of the Ten Realms. The newly crowned Queen is faced with the heavy burden of ruling a wild land bereft of the noble support enjoyed by her predecessor; gone are the old families, the old estates, and in their place looms the spectre of civil war as robber barons seize lands and tax the people to the hilt.

Winning over the rugged folk of Bernicia and rescuing her lands from ruin is no easy task; the Queen must learn to tell friend from foe, loyal supporter from sycophant, chivalrous knight from greedy merchant lord, lest her wild realm become naught but a bandit’s paradise. Fortunately the Queen has a few staunch allies, for the long march to lift Bernicia out of the darkness that threatens it is no easy road, and the journey has only just begun.
