Deira is a land touched by tragedy, and shaped by myth and legend. The former King found his rule challenged by the now current Queen, who had ruled Deira many years prior until her mysterious vanishing amongst the Mists of Elvesham. Emerging but a few short years ago, there was a tense period between the two monarchs before an alliance was brokered for the good of the realm. Since the tragic loss of the King in the cleansing of Kol Kathrak, the Queen has had sole rule of Deira from the royal palace in Preston, and her rule has seen the realm prosper.

By far the largest realm of Albion in terms of sheer land mass, Deira is remarkably sparsely settled, with vast swathes of largely uninhabited land separating the more populated towns and cities. A frontier land, it occupies a key place in Albion’s geography as a thoroughfare between the Northern and Southern realms, and thus has a reputation as a trade-hub, a place to strike deals and exchange goods.

Because of the distances that separate the larger settlements, there are many small, secluded villages and hamlets spread across Deira that rarely, if ever, see outside visitors. These tiny outposts of civilisation are so isolated from the goings on of the realm at large that they often appear barely aware of such mundane matters as who rules, and those rare visitors are left with a curious feeling that they have stepped out of Albion into some lost pocket of a by-gone age, where folk tales and hearth wisdom rule. It is these lonely hamlets that have given rise to the realm’s reputation for strange traditions, bizarre customs and odd quirks, and is likely a large part of why Deira is known to have a more relaxed attitude towards religious practices outside the norm for Albion.

Historically, Deira has suffered great loss, with a great necromancer laying waste to much of the land and people in years past. Ever is there a silver lining however, for out of these grim events rose brave bands. Even now, Deira maintains its reputation for producing heroes, and those heroes now march forth to battle once again, as Elmet calls for aid.
